    2. Wealth Extraction vs. Wealth Creation. This is closely related to Point 1. The bad part of finance is engaged in predatory wealth extraction, as opposed to the good part, which supports wealth creation (and other socially useful ends.) This has geographical dimensions, as well as racial, gender, disability-based, and others. In particular, local predatory lending laws can be associated with either increases or decreases in applications and originations for subprime loans. Earlier research on North Carolina law had found that the supply and flow of credit was reduced when the law became effective.

In lieu of state action to regulate these bad actors, Metro Ideas Project proposes a three-pronged strategy for cities and counties to curb predatory lending practices: Warn, Permit, and Lend. The LA Stop the Debt Trap Coalition has successfull y advocated for new protections that curb predatory payday and small dollar loans. The result of this collaborative was a groundbreaking motion in Los Angeles County to develop a comprehensive County response to combat high-cost loans and create affordable alternatives.

In his book Status Anxiety, Alan De Botton argues that in the Western world for two millennia there were three main stories people told about wealth and poverty, which made it not shameful to be poor. One was the medieval view that peasants provided the basic needs of society and thus, it was honorable to be poor.   The discipline, from Smith to Hayek, has taught us about the need to limit power to curb the predatory capabilities of mankind. And when we don’t heed its teachings, we don’t overturn the basic results that Adam Smith, J. B. Say, and F. A. Hayek arrived at about the power of the market to create wealth and of politics to destroy it.
